MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

Municipal and School Board Election 2018

The next regular Municipal Election to elect a Mayor, Reeve, Town Councillors and School Board Trustees will be held on Monday October 22, 2018.  The next term of Council begins on December 1, 2018 and concludes in 2022.

Bill 181, The Municipal Elections Modernization Act, 2016, came into effect June 9, 2016 and made changes to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 for the 2018 Municipal Elections.  For an overview of these changes please visit the Ministry of Municipal Affairs - Elections website or see the updated Municipal Election Act.

Nomination Period

The nomination period will start on Tuesday May 1, 2018 and closes on Nomination Day, Friday July 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

To run for office, you must be an eligible elector in the Town of Renfrew.  This means that you must be:

  • A Canadian Citizen;
  • At least 18 years of age;
  • Reside in the Town, or be the owner or tenant in the Town, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and
  • Not prohibited from voting under any law.

Alternative Voting - 2018 Municipal Election

On April 25, 2017, Renfrew Town Council approved the use of Alternate Voting for the 2018 Municipal Elections.  Electors will be able to cast their vote online or by telephone 24/7 anywhere they have an internet or telephone line.  This is an accessible environmentally-friendly, and convient method of voting.  Internet voting provides votes with flexibility and convenience, reduces wait times at the voting location, delivers quick and accurate results, and allows students and vacationsers to vote from anywhere.

Electors will receive a notice in the mail providing instructions and a secure PIN number to use to vote by either the internet or telephone.  Electors are encouraged to vote using either the internet or telephone between 10:00 a.m. on Friday October 12, 2018 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday October 22, 2018.  There is no need to wait to vote on election day.

For those electors who wish to participate in a more traditional voting method, the Town will also have a voting location on dates to be identified at a later date, at Town Hall, 127 Raglan Street South, Renfrew Ontario.  Voters are requested to brin their notice with their PIN number with them or their government issued photo identification to the voting location.

A help desk will be available at the Town Office, located at 127 Raglan Street South, Renfrew Ontario to provide assistance during regular business hours from Friday October 12, 2018 to and on Monday October 22, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Are you on the Voters' List?

The Voters' List for the Town of Renfrew is prepared by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).  MPAC is a not-for-profit corporation mandated by the Government of Ontario to conduct property assessments for tax purposes on behalf of municipalities, and is legislated to provide municipalities wit ha Preliminary List of Electors in a municipal election year.  This list is used by Municipal Clerks to produce the final Voters' List used for the election.

MPAC administers voterlookup.ca which is an online service available to electors.  Using voterlookup.ca, electors can confirm and update their electoral information for the purposes of the Preliminary List of Electors for the upcoming municipal and school board elections.  MPAC will launch voterlookup.ca during the spring of 2018.

ENUMERATION FORMS - Monday June 4, 2017  must be returned to the MPAC Office in order to on Preliminary List of Electors.

NOMINATIO DAY ENDS - Friday July 27, 2017 at 2:00 pm

VOTING DAY - Monday October 22, 2017
